Make Social Media Work for You

We meet lots of people and when we tell them about what we do at Fabulous Marketing, it is inevitable that social media gets a mention. Many people feel the same about social media but by making a couple of small tweaks, you really can make social media work for the good of your business.

Based on the various conversations we’ve had, and will no doubt continue to have about social media; we’ve selected the three most common remarks people make in relation to the topic, with the aim dispelling some of the myths and making the process less daunting and more accessible to everyone.

“I’m not sure if I need to be on social media but everyone else is, so I think I should be”

This is not the case at all. When deciding whether or not your business needs a social media presence you first need to consider, who you are selling to and what you are selling?

If it is unlikely that your target is even on social media, is there much point in you being on there yourself if you can’t talk to who you want to? Perhaps you would be better off channelling your efforts into other methods of communication that your targets would be more receptive to.

You may come to the conclusion that your target isn’t active on Facebook but is on LinkedIn, for example. This would suggest having a presence on LinkedIn would be more beneficial than Facebook and this is the appropriate platform for you to explore.

Does the nature of your business lend itself to social media? Is it likely that a prospective customer would consult social media during their decision-making process? The answers to these questions will again help you to work out where you are best focussing your efforts.

Don’t build a profile for every available social media platform for the sake of it, build a profile on the platforms that you believe will help you to reach the individuals you want to, reflects what your business has to offer and will be a positive addition to your business. If it appears that social media is not the right fit at all, then it is ok to steer away from it entirely.

Much like mobile phones, social media hasn’t always existed, and other methods have been proven to work just as effectively. As with everything in life, there is time and place for social media, and therefore it may not be right for your business in its current state.

“I just don’t have the time for social media”

Very common and something we hear a lot. It is true, social media can be time consuming but only if you let it be. It requires a certain level of discipline and it can easily eat up your day, that’s why it’s important to be thorough and plan in specific time for it.

There used to be a school of thought that the more you post the better, this theory still applies to some platforms but as a general rule, is not so much the case. By posting too regularly It can actually have the opposite effect and turn followers away because you are creating noise that is of little interest or relevance.

Schedule half an hour in each day to check your notifications, perhaps write a post (if relevant), respond to enquiries and interact with other businesses. All of these activities create visibility for your brand and won’t take up hours of your time.

Similar to the first point, don’t post for the sake of posting, post when it is relevant, and you have time to. This moves us on nicely to our third common remark.

“I never know what I should post on social media”

Don’t force it, if there isn’t anything to say, simply don’t say anything at all. Wait until you have something relevant to post and act then.  It can be a challenge to work out what to post but again this all comes back to planning.

Once a month or perhaps every week, sit down and make a list of everything that is happening in and around your business. Whether you are launching a new product, attending an event, have learned some industry specific news, etc. these are all pieces of information you want to tell your targets about. Keep them informed with what is going on in your business and show them that you have an understanding of the wider environment your business is in.  It doesn’t matter if you haven’t got a post for every day because you only need to post when you have something relevant to share. Also bear in mind that it is a good idea to mix up your posts across your platforms, don’t post the same thing across all of them at the same time.

Another useful tip is to think about the format of your posts, every so often post a video perhaps, use a combination of photos and graphics that complement one another so your posts don’t all look the same and stand out.

Remember you don’t need to have a presence on every social media platform, you can spend as much or as little time you want to on it and you don’t have to publish x amount of posts per day. Social media can cause a lot of unnecessary stress, but there is no need for it to, once you have found a way that works for you, stick with it.

Social media is a very small part of the bigger marketing picture. Whilst it can be worthwhile and useful, it must work in tandem with your other marketing efforts.
